International Baccalaureate (IB) at MGIS (Ashta)
The MGIS (Ashta) pathway to international education using International Baccalaureate (IB)
At the Mahatma Gandhi International School (MGIS) we want students to be academically prepared with the knowledge, skills and global orientation to succeed in university and beyond. We do this through a rigorous and balanced international schools curriculum at primary and secondary level the International Baccalaureate (IB). Our IB programs address the various levels of learning, empowering academic challenges, establishing a critical thinking approach, and entrenching the students to find links between their learning and real life.
Middle Years Programme (Grades 9-10)
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) of the IB aims at making the students exercise critical and reflective thinking. Particularly, the MYP promotes an idea of investigating links between different disciplines and using them in practice. This is a competency-based and concept-oriented curriculum which is presented in projects and modules and are experiential and meaningful.
Subjects in the MYP:
- Language Acquisition
- Language and Literature
- Individuals and Societies
- Sciences
- Mathematics
- Arts
- Physical and Health Education
- Design
Students do the Personal project in Grade 10, whereby they are free to take the project on something they have an interest in and showcase their learning process.
Evaluation in the MYP
The MYP assessment is criterion-referenced where special descriptors have been given by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). The teachers lead the students in acquiring knowledge by providing clarifications within the task and the results that should be provided at specific achievement levels. Parents receive two report cards at the end of every semester which summarise students progress.
Diploma Programme (Grades 11-12)
IB Diploma Programme (DP) is one of the most academically challenging and balanced programmes compulsory to students, which will promote success in the university level and beyond. It has a reputation of being intellectually rich and holistically educative, touching on both the intellectual, social, emotional as well as the physical welfare of the student.
Students in the DP have to choose one subject in each of six groups and fill the core requirements so that they can have a well balanced educational experience.

DP assessment:
Students in the Diploma Programme are subjected to summative assessments in form of term examinations and end of programme written examinations. They are a mix of both external and internal exams with the final examinations marked by external examiners. The final year performance is the basis of predicting the grades.
Programme subject areas (Career-related Programme )
The International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP) is a practically oriented, practical-job (career related) programme that can be followed by those students who want to obtain career related learning. It marries two subjects following the Diploma Programme at the IB with the CP core (Personal and Professional Skills, Service Learning, Reflective Project, and Language Development) and career specific studies of the BTEC Program.
MGIS (Ashta) is committed to provide the IBCP program, being the first school in India to do so and the first batch has started in July 2019. Not only will it support children with interests in film making and computer science to pursue their career by providing them with precious learning opportunities, but also will allow them to produce and launch practical projects that would complement the BTEC program that has been offered by MGIS since 2011.
IBCP Assessment and Evaluation:
The IBCP students are also evaluated as per high international standards even though there are internal and external IBCP evaluations. The students are measured by their coursework, portfolio presentations in course subjects such as film making or IT, and on an external examination which is marked by the IB examiner.
Coursework Includes:
Formative assessment where the student gave feedback, throughout the course to help in improving the student work before completing final submissions.
End of the course written exams, which offer a review of how well the student is learning.
